Hashim Amla, South Africa's premier batsman, was signed by Hampshire as their overseas cricketer for the first three months of the County season, on Wednesday (February 28).

"Hashim is a world-class player," director of cricket Giles White said. "He is someone we have admired from a distance and it will be great to have him around."

Amla might also extended his contract at Hampshire. In County cricket, he has previously played for Essex, Nottinghamshire, Surrey and Derbyshire. Amla, who made his international debut in 2004, has compiled 8786 and 7535 Test and Test and ODI runs.

"I spoke to him about opening the batting. We have some strength in depth there and it looks a strong team on paper if everyone is fit. He normally bats at three for South Africa but he is very comfortable opening. He wants to play, score runs and contribute," White said.
