People in Malaysia are hanging white flags outside their homes to signal that they need food or other kinds of help. The flags are a lifeline for low-income families that have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and enhanced lockdowns. Many have family members that have lost jobs or wages. People are using the hashtag

#benderaputih

which means white flag in Malay.

When flags are raised, members of the community respond by delivering food or other necessities. Stores are also offering free food and supplies for those in need. Malaysia is currently experiencing the worst surge in COVID-19 since the pandemic started. As of July 8, Malaysia has seen 808,000 COVID-19 cases and 5,900 deaths.
