Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday arrived in Istanbul to attend the inauguration ceremony of the TurkStream project which will deliver Russian gas to Turkey and Europe.

The ceremony, to be hosted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday, will also be attended by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, the Turkish presidency said in a press release.

Putin arrived from Damascus, Syria, where he held a summit with Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad earlier Tuesday.

Putin is also expected to have a summit meeting with Erdogan over the latest developments in the region, amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran that have raised the specter of another war following the U.S. assassination of Qassem Soleimani, former commander of the Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps.

The war in Libya, where Turkey is sending troops in support of the UN-recognized Government of National Accord, and the conflict in Syria, where Ankara and Moscow are both militarily involved, are also set to dominate the summit as well.
