Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al- Maliki said Sunday his country supports the recent actions of the Egyptian government on protesters supporting ousted President Mohamed Morsi.

"We watch with deep concern the ongoing security developments in Egypt, which left many people dead and wounded in a plot aimed at undermining the will of the Egyptian people," Maliki said in a statement.

"At the time, we strongly stand by the Egyptian government to impose the rule of law and the extension of social peace and security throughout Egypt, and appeal to them to exercise maximum restraint to deny the enemies of Egypt any chance," he said.

The Iraqi prime minister also called on all Egyptians to renounce violence and sit around a negotiation table to prevent commotion that could harm Egypt and its leading role.

"We wish Egypt security, prosperity and rapid return to the practice of its pivotal role in the region and the world," he said.

Maliki's remarks came following Egypt's dispersal of two major pro-Morsi sit-ins on Wednesday and the ensuing clashes between Morsi's supporters and security men, which had left over 800 people killed nationwide.
