Two militants of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant outfit were killed and two Indian policemen were wounded Monday in a 20-hour-long gunfight in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight broke out Sunday evening when contingents of Indian police and paramilitary troopers of Central Reserve Police Force were fired upon by militants from a house in Ahmad Nagar- Soura locality of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian- controlled Kashmir.

"Two militants were gunned down in a prolonged gunfight today in Soura and in the standoff our two policemen were also wounded fighting them," said a senior police official.

"Last evening on specific information an operation was launched in the area, during which militants fired upon our men, triggering a fierce gunfight."

Locals said the houses where the militants had taken shelter during the night were partially damaged in gunfight.

The police spokesman said bodies of both the militants and some ammunition were retrieved from the gunfight site.

The slain militants have been identified as LeT cadres. The LeT outfit is accused of carrying out the 2008 Mumbai attack that claimed 166 lives.

On Sunday two militants of LeT were killed in a brief gunfight at Khrew locality of Pampore town in Pulwama district, about 22 km south of Srinagar city. The duo was trying to decamp with service rifles of two Indian policemen after killing them during an attack on a pro-India political worker's house.

Last year 73 suspected militants were killed in the restive region.

The 2013 saw 38 percent increase in violence compared to 2012. The violence claimed 204 lives in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir. Of the 204 killed, 48 were civilians, 73 suspected militants, one unidentified and 82 Indian troopers.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. The gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region.
