Argentina secure Davis Cup world group playoff berth

Guido Pella defeated Christian Garin in the decisive rubber as Argentina earned a Davis Cup world group playoff berth with a 3-2 victory over Chile on Saturday.

World No. 63 Pella prevailed 6-3, 7-6 (3) in an hour and 48 minutes at Aldo Cantoni Stadium in the central western Argentine city of San Juan.

The result at the clay-court venue means Argentina will vie for a place in next year's world group in September. The draw for the playoff matches will be held on Tuesday.

With the matchup tied at 1-1 overnight, Chile took the lead when Nicolas Jarry and Hans Podlipnik-Castillo beat Maximo Gonzalez and Pella 6-7(7), 7-5, 6-3 in the doubles.

Diego Schwartzman then levelled the tie with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jarry.
