The Zambia Cooperative Union (ZCU) has commended China for a village chicken rearing training program which has helped boost income for Zambian farmers in Luanshya District, Copperbelt Province.

The project is a two-year program being conducted and funded by China, with the Zambian Ministry of livestock and fisheries spearheading the training of farmers by Chinese experts.

Thomas Banda, ZCU Copperbelt Province coordinator commended the Chinese for training farmers from 10 various cooperatives in the district on chicken rearing, saying the training economically empowers farmers.

Banda said the training has been well received adding that youths and women farmers were involved in the village chicken rearing program.

"This program has been a success. It is going to improve the lives of our people in the district solely dependent on the mining industry," he said.

He said that the Zambian government was working in collaboration with the Chinese government in improving the living standards of people especially those in the rural parts of the country.

"This program is good, people here have learnt new methods of rearing village chickens for improved revenue generation unlike only rearing broiler chickens," he said.

And one of the beneficiaries of the training program, Kelly Simumba expressed gratitude to be part of the program adding that he is also going to share the acquired knowledge to others.

Simumba encouraged young people to take an interest in acquiring knowledge, especially in agriculture and animal husbandry.

"It is important that young people take interest in acquiring knowledge in productive activities such as chicken rearing. We are thankful for this training project." he said.
