Google celebrated Punjabi writer and poet Amrita Pritam’s 100th birthday, on Saturday with a doodle.
Born when India was a part of the British empire, she died in 2005 at the age of 86. Pritam was one of the most imminent poets in the world.
In the doodle made by google, Amrita was seen writing while sitting in an open garden with black roses around. The doodle was a reference to her autobiography, she called Black Rose.
Her work is regarded as pathbreaking for the time when she was writing. Women writers were rare then and women were not allowed to speak their minds. In that society Pritam’s work encouraged women to speak up about their lives.
Pritam started writing early and her first book was published when she was 16 years old. During her lifetime she published more than 100 books. Her work has been translated in many languages across the world.
She was also a member of the Indian parliament, and received many prestigious awards in India and abroad.
