China will continue to work with Pakistan to fight COVID-19 and expand cooperation on assistance with medical supplies, experience exchanges, traditional Chinese medicine and vaccine development, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Friday.

Spokesperson Zhao Lijian made the remarks at a press conference when asked for a briefing on cooperation between China and Pakistan in the fight against COVID-19.

China handed over 1,000 ventilators to Pakistan at Islamabad International Airport on Thursday. During the handover ceremony, Muhammad Afzal, chairman of Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), expressed his appreciation of the continuous assistance provided to his country by the government and people of China during the pandemic.

The NDMA chairman said China not only helped Pakistan to battle the virus, but also assisted the country in fighting swarms of locusts by providing pesticides and related equipment.

Hailing the mutual assistance between the two countries since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Zhao said the Chinese government attaches great importance to assisting Pakistan in its fight against the pandemic and bilateral cooperation in fighting the pandemic fully demonstrated solidarity and cooperation are potent weapons against global challenges.

He said that, according to statistics, China has provided Pakistan with seven batches of medical supplies, including face masks, protective gowns, testing kits, ventilators, goggles, surgical gloves and thermometers, with a combined weight of more than 100 metric tons.

China will continue to work with Pakistan to fight COVID-19 and expand cooperation on assistance with medical supplies, experience exchanges, traditional Chinese medicine and vaccine development, until a final victory over the virus, he added.

Noting that Friday marks Pakistan's Independence Day, Zhao extended China's congratulations and said it is believed that Pakistan will score greater achievements in the cause of national construction.
