As a part of the Chinese Lantern Festival celebration, renowned Chinese calligrapher Wang Dongling made spontaneous calligraphy performance on Sunday in Hong Kong. Upon his spectacular public performance, Wang said while the essence of traditional Chinese art must be retained, he looked forward to have more elements of modern arts included into Chinese calligraphy workpieces.

Veteran calligrapher Wang Dongling drew attention of more than 300 spectators in Hong Kong, by writing the ancient poem "The Moon over the River on a Spring Night" with his catchy brush. He said this poem perfectly fits the romantic atmosphere of the Lantern Festival, which is also known as the Chinese Valentine's Day.

Kung Fu, Chinese dishes and Confucianism and various forms of the Chinese culture have long been widespread across the world. Wang said as the most energetic type with long stand history, Chinese calligraphy should by all means be introduced to the rest of the world, too. Wang said this can be achieved with the assistance of cutting edge technology.

He said that cutting edge technologies can make calligraphy more accessible to the public, in the mean time retain the essential values of the ancient arts. His calligraphy writing performance in Hong Kong was also recorded with a 3D camera.

Wang added that contemporary calligraphers should also seek inspiration from art pieces of other kinds, such as architecture, sculptures and so on, which will in turn become the catalyst of their calligraphy works.
