Deputy UN chief to travel to Kenya to attend UN Environment Assembly

UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson will travel to Nairobi, Kenya, to participate in the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-2) later this week, a UN spokesman said here Monday.

Eliasson, who is in Turkey to attend the World Humanitarian Summit on Monday, will travel to the Kenyan capital on Wednesday, Stephane Dujarric said at a daily news briefing here.

The second session of the UNEA-2 kicked off in Nairobi on Monday, with a call for concerted efforts to revitalize green economy and sustainability agenda.

Environment ministers and representatives from more than 170 countries, scientists, industry executives and campaigners are attending the five-day Environment Assembly.

Eliasson left New York this weekend for Istanbul, Turkey, to attend the World Humanitarian Summit, Dujarric said, adding that he gave a press conference there after his arrival, talking about the need to deal with the root causes that led to mass displacement and other humanitarian crises.

He will return to New York next weekend, Dujarric added.
