Remarkable progress has been achieved in China's fight against narcotics in the past five years. The following facts and figures were released by Chinese narcotics control authorities ahead of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking:
-- In the past five years, 638,000 drug crimes have been cracked, 32,000 drug trafficking gangs have been eliminated, 780,000 suspects have been arrested, and more than 400 tonnes of drugs of various kinds have been seized.
-- The domestic manufacture of drugs has shrunk significantly, accounting for less than 20 percent of seized drugs.
-- Special operations targeting online drug trafficking cracked 29,000 internet-related drug cases, which led to the arrest of more than 39,000 suspects, seizure of 12 tonnes of drugs, and shutting down of 960 drug-related websites.
-- A series of international anti-narcotics cooperation measures with neighboring countries have been introduced, including the poppy replacement programs in Myanmar and Laos.
-- With the help of remote-sensing satellites and drones, China has destroyed more than 10.2 million illicit poppy plants and more than 3.4 million cannabis plants over the past five years.
-- During the same period, China cracked more than 2,300 cases involving drug-making materials and seized 18,000 tonnes of precursor chemicals.
-- In recent years, the country has identified 231,000 people involved in drug-related activities and living in poverty. With targeted anti-drug and poverty-alleviation measures, nearly 84 percent of them had been lifted out of poverty by March 2020.
-- In 2019, the number of new drug addicts in China fell by 11.9 percent year on year, representing an overall downward trend for five consecutive years.
-- In the past five years, China has identified 4.27 million drug users, and sent 1.56 million to compulsory rehabilitation.
-- A total of 38,000 community rehabilitation institutions had been set up by the end of 2019, serving more than 480,000 people.
