The number of COVID-19 infections in the United States has passed the 10 million mark, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally.

The country remains the hardest-hit globally by the pandemic, having also reported more than 237,000 deaths.

The U.S. accounts for nearly 20 percent of the world's infections and over 18 percent of its fatalities.

The country has seen a recent upsurge in daily new cases, hitting figures beyond the 100,000 mark.

The numbers have sparked fears of a possible worse second wave of infections.
