Myanmar will get 688 million euro ( 900 million U.S. dollars) in aid from the European Union (EU) for the next seven years from 2014 to 2020, a semi-official media reported Wednesday.
The fund, which aims to reinforce EU's support to the country's multiple transition, will help develop agriculture in rural areas, improve food and nutrition security, support education and promote peace process, an EU statement was quoted by the Global New Light of Myanmar as saying.
"With this support, the EU will build on its ongoing initiatives and continue to promote peace, sustainable development and democratic governance for the benefit of all people in Myanmar, " the statement added.
EU lifted its sanctions on Myanmar in 2013, opening its representative office here following the historic visit of Myanmar President U Thein Sein to five EU countries -- Norway, Finland, Austria, Belgium and Italy.
