Police of the Republic of Congo have seized 35 tons of counterfeit drugs in the Central African country's capital Brazzaville in the latest crackdown on fakes.

The deputy police director, general Albert Ngoto, told the media on Wednesday that different types of counterfeit drugs were seized during an operation carried out by the police in the capital.

Several distributors of the dangerous products were arrested, he said.

"About 20 dealers were arrested and questioned by our services. They will soon be arraigned in court," he added.

He clarified that this time the operation did not target the small scale street vendors, but it was focused on the large scale wholesalers of the counterfeit drugs.

Ngoto appealed to the population not to buy any of the drugs because of the danger they pose and to report to the police any suppliers of such drugs.
