Supported by tribal fighters, the Iraqi military is preparing to march towards the western desert bordering Syria to take back one of the last strongholds held by ISIL.

The Iraqi government have been surveying the area, laying the groundwork for further strikes.

On Tuesday, an AFP journalist visited the area and found several Iraqi artillery units positioning themselves around Rawa and Anna, roughly 100 kilometers from the border with Syria.

Authorities of the Iraqi army claim to have strong confidence in winning the war, as ISIL has suffered a series of defeats. The ISIL army are also facing the threat of strikes from US-led-Arab-Kurdish forces and troops backed by Russia.
