Africa's COVID-19 cases top 2.26 million mark: Africa CDC

The number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in Africa surpassed the 2.26 million mark on Monday, according to data from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

The health agency's latest figures showed that the continent had reported 2,261,589 cases by Monday afternoon with 53,853 deaths.

South Africa remains the continent's hardest-hit country by the pandemic, having recorded 814,565 infections and 22,206 fatalities.

The country accounts for 36.02 percent of Africa's COVID-19 cases and 41.23 percent of its deaths.

Morocco has registered Africa's second-highest caseload, with 379,657 infections.

The only other countries in Africa that have reported more than 100,000 COVID-19 cases are Egypt (118,432), Ethiopia (113,295) and Tunisia (104,002).

In terms of deaths, ten African countries have reported more than 1,000 COVID-19 related fatalities.

The Africa CDC data also showed that the numbed of patients that had successfully recovered from the disease reached 1,927,697.
