Twenty-eight European parliament members will be visiting Kashmir today. The visit is being called an “unofficial” visit.

On Monday, the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met the European MPs and briefed them about the situation in Kashmir. The delegation also metVice-President M Venkaiah Naidu.

This would be the first visit of a foreign delegation to Kashmir, after the government took away the special status of the former province of Jammu and Kashmir and imposed security restrictions on August 5.

About the European delegates visit, Iltija Mufti, a politician from Kashmir said through twitter, "Hope they get a chance to speak to the people, local media, doctors and civil society members.”

“The iron curtain between Kashmir and the world needs to be lifted and the government must be held accountable for pushing J&K into turmoil," he further said. The delegates come from nine countries across Europe.

Meanwhile, the opposition has criticized the move. A Congress party leader, Rahul Gandhi said through twitter, "MPs from Europe are welcome to go on a guided tour of Jammu & Kashmir while Indian MPs are banned and denied entry. There is something very wrong with that."
