APD | 'Thank You China' trends in Nepali social media sphere for 1mln vaccine grant

China, on Wednesday, announced a grant of 1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines for Nepal, raising a beacon of hope among the Nepali public who are facing a tough battle againt COVID-19 pandemic.

Chinese ambassador to Nepal Hou Yanqi shared such announcement in her twitter account, following which 'Thank You China' started trending in social media sphere.

“President Xi Jinping has announced to provide a grant of 1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to his Nepali counterpart, Bidya Devi Bhandari through a phone conversation,” Yanqi announced.

Nepali President Bhandari and her Chinese counterpart had held a phone conversation earlier today.

"President Bidya Devi Bhandari and President Xi Jinping of PRC discussed bilateral relations & COVID-19 related cooperation over a telephone conversation today. President Bhandari thanked President Xi for the additional grant of one million COVID-19 vaccine to Nepal," Ministry of Foreign Affairs had informed.

Following the announcement, Nepali leaders, intellectuals and general public from different spheres of life took to the social media accounts like Facebook and Twitter in thanking China, Chinese President and the people of China for helping Nepal in the time of crisis.

"Thank you. A friend in need is a friend indeed," Rastriya Prajatantra Party Chairman and former Deputy Prime Minister Kamal Thapa stated in Twitter.

A renowned banker, CEO of Nabil Bank, Anil Shah remarked, "Deepest gratitude from the people of Nepal to the people and government of China for this most needed assistance of providing 1 million vaccinations. Thank you for always being true friend and neighbor of Nepal."

A clinical professor Ishan Adhikari mentioned in Twitter that there is no second alternative to Vaccines, adding that "Lives at stake- No time to waste! Vaccine Equity is Basic Humanity! Thank you China for VACCINES!"

The social media platforms were overwhelmed with the messages like Thank you China, Thank you Chinese President, China to the Rescue, Long live China-Nepal relationship, among others for the kind gesture from the neighboring nation in the toughest time.

The latest announcement comes at a time when Nepal has been waiting to receive one million doses of vaccines from Serum Institute of India, for which it had already paid in February. The procurement process has been stalled due to the alleged involvement of middle-men and their share demands.

Bikash Sangruala, a journalist, mentioned, "We need a lot more vaccines for inoculation. Please prioritize Nepal in commercial export of vaccines."

The gesture from the northern neighbor has raised hope among the public, who are desperately waiting for inoculation to fight against the COVID-19 virus. Only certain percent of population have received both the doses of vaccines so far.

Earlier, the Chinese government had provided 800,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine in a grant assistant to Nepal.

Over 6,500 Nepalis have already lost their lives in the battle against the virus.
