More than 100 heads of state and government will gather here later this month for the UN Sustainable Development Summit to adopt the sustainable development agenda that lasts through 2030, the world body announced Thursday.
An outcome document "Transforming our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development," which includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), is due to be adopted at the summit to be held from Sept.25-27 at the UN Headquarters in New York, said the UN Department of Public Information in an advisory to the press.
The SDGs will replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a set of eight anti-poverty targets to be reached by the end of this year.
"The Summit will chart a new era of sustainable development in which poverty will be eradicated, prosperity shared and the core drivers of climate change tackled," said the UN Department of Public Information in the advisory, quoting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as saying.
The summit will be also be joined by leaders from civil society, religious groups and the private sector.
According to the UN advisory, there will be six interactive dialogues during the summit, focusing on ending poverty and hunger; tackling inequalities, empowering women and girls and leaving no one behind; fostering sustainable economic growth, transformation and promoting sustainable consumption and production; protecting our planet and combatting climate change; building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions to achieve sustainable development; and delivering on a revitalized Global Partnership.
The launch of Technology Facilitation Mechanism, a private sector forum and a civil society event will also be held during the summit, said the UN advisory.
China has made important contributions to the global efforts in reaching a fair, inclusive and sustainable post-2015 development agenda, according to Wang Min, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN.
"As a development agenda that will guide International cooperation for development in the next 15 years, the post-2015 development agenda is of profound historical significance," said Wang at a UN General Assembly meeting held Tuesday.
