Responding to the accusation that China is not the inventor of technology, and rather only the amplifier of its applicatioin, Dr. Hsiao-wuen Hon, corporate vice president of Microsoft, talked about how ideas are built on top of others: “You stand on the shoulders of a giant to look further,” Dr. Hon said. “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. That’s how human beings advance our society.”

In the recent escalating trade disputes between US and China, the US government has accused China of stealing intellectual property.

Dr. Hon said if there are disputes, they should be arbitrated through the law.

“If some companies or countries really violate intellectual property, people can go to court,” said Dr. Hon.

The ongoing tensions with the US, as Dr. Hon said are complicated. But he said he thinks China now has a great opportunity to show the world that they are going to be more open despite those “populist” accusations.

“This way can not only help China, but also establish China as a leader in this global trade and globalization era,” Hon said.

As Dr. Hon pointed out, many Chinese innovations are now recognized by the world and he can see tremendous opportunities in Asia. Hon said it now the right time to talk about digital transformation.

“With data, computation power and AI (artificial intelligence), we see every company has an opportunity to doing the digital transform.”
