KATHMANDU, Aug 30 (APD) – The fourth summit of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is being held in Kathmandu today.

Leaders of nations along the coast of the Bay of Bengal will be meeting in Kathmandu for 2 days starting today. Seven South and Southeast Asian nations, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, are part of BIMSTEC.

The leaders of BIMSTEC member states are expected to discuss building infrastructure, including roads and ports to make shipping within member states more efficient. Likewise, cooperation over wide areas, including security and disaster response, will also likely be on the agenda.

BIMSTEC was founded in 1997 with the goal of promoting economic cooperation within the member states.
