Powerful blast at a weapon depot in eastern Syria killed at least 25 militants with the Islamic State (IS) militant group on Wednesday, a monitor group reported.

Several explosions rattled the city of Mayadeen in the eastern countryside of Deir al-Zour province, in what appeared to be blasts in a weapon depot belongs to the IS group, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

It said 20 others were wounded and the death toll could rise due to the large number of severely wounded militants.

The UK-based watchdog group said it is not clear what caused the explosion, whether it was a result of a bombing or a technical malfunction.

The IS group has captured large swathes of the oil-rich province of Deir al-Zour over the span of the four-year-old conflict due to its location on the borderline with Iraq and its oil plants. Enditem
