Five Afghan Local Police (ALP) members were shot dead by their comrade in the country's eastern province of Nangarhar overnight, a local official said Friday.

"The incident occurred in a checkpoint in Marko Bazaar locality of Ghanikhel district Thursday night. The victims were sleeping when the shooting took place and an investigation has been launched into the incident," district Governor Abdul Wahab told Xinhua.

Following the firing, the ALP member involved in the attack fled the scene and took away a handful of weapons from the security checkpoint, Wahab added.

In late March, nine ALP personnel were killed in a similar attack in the northern Kunduz province.
