ISLAMABAD, May 31 (APD) -Pakistan has given the initial approval to China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) for the construction of 300-megawatts coal-fired power project in the country’s southwest port city of Gwadar, officials told APD on Wednesday.
An official from the Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) of Pakistan said that the Letter of Interest was signed by PPIB Managing Director Shah Jahan Mirza and CCCC Vice President Xu Jun in the country’s capital city of Islamabad.
The project is part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, and it will be constructed at the cost of Rs 55 billion (528.85 million US dollars).
The CCCC will develop the 300MW power project with environment friendly supercritical technology by utilizing imported coal in Gwadar, Pakistan’s deep-sea, warm-water port located at the Arabian Sea.
Gwadar port coal-fired power project is one of the 12 projects of 10,934MW being developed under the CPEC.
The project poised to be extended to 600MW has already been approved by the Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) of the CPEC and the CCCC will start construction of the project after obtaining tariff approval and achieving the financial close.
Earlier this month in Pakistan’s Sahiwal district, a 600megawatt unit of coal-fired power project of 1320megawatt built by China’s Huaneng Shandong and Shandong Ruyi Science & Technology Group started production in a record time of 22 month, six months earlier than the planned period.
