The44-year-oldisoneofthegrowingranksofruralChinesedo-it-yourselfinventorswhoseindividualismcontrastswiththecollectivefarmingofpastdecades.

Inhiselectricvessel,gaugesandairpressuredialswerescrewedtothecabinwallaboveplasticpipingthatwouldlookappropriatebeneathakitchensink,whilehandwrittenoperatinginstructionswerepostedusingstickytape.Electriccablesspewedfromanarrayoffuseboxes,andagascanisterwaspositionedonthefloor.

"Thisistheairpump,it'susedforgoingupanddown,"Tanexplained,addingnonchalantly:"Ihaven'tinstalledanykindofescapedevice."

TanwasbornjusttwoyearsaftertheBeatlesreleasedtheir1968hitYellowSubmarine,buthegrewupinruralpovertyandsayshedoesnotknowanysongsaboutcoloredunderwatervessels.

Atthenationallevel,Chinahasincreasingnavalambitions,andTan,whomakeshislivingsellingchickens,firsthatchedtheideaofbuildingasubmarinetwoyearsago,launchingaprototypeinMarch.

"Ineverstudiedthisinschool.I'vebasedeverythingonmyimagination,"hesaid."Icanstayunderwaterfor45minutes."
