Six paratroopers were killed in an explosion at a firing range in western Russia, a high-ranking military officer said Tuesday.

The incident took place at about 19:00 Moscow time (1500 GMT) at a range near Strugi Krasniye in the Pskov region when the servicemen were returning from firing drills, local media reported.

"An unidentified explosive device went off while Airborne Forces servicemen were returning in absolute darkness from the final line during qualifications," Commander of the Airborne Troops Vladimir Shimanov told Itar-Tass news agency.

Six paratroopers were killed, and two other servicemen were wounded. The injured soldiers have been hospitalized, according to the officer.

Military investigators have launched a probe into the fatal explosion. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu urged to offer all necessary assistance to the families of the victims.

On April 13, 2011, at the same firing range, four soldiers were killed and one wounded in an explosion taking place during military drills of the Airborne Troops.
