The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) leader Kim Jong Un addressed an unusual predawn military parade held in Pyongyang to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of its ruling Workers' Party on Saturday, according to footage aired on state television.
The video showed Kim make an appearance as a clock struck midnight.
Dressed in a grey suit and tie, he waved to the crowd and accepted flowers from children while surrounded by military officials wearing rows of medals.
Sometimes appearing emotional, Kim thanked the military for help in recovering from a series of damaging storms over the summer, and praised the country's efforts to prevent any coronavirus outbreak.
The DPRK leader told the audience that he was grateful "not a single person" in the DPRK had contracted the coronavirus and wished "good health" to the world's coronavirus suffers.
"I wish good health to all the people around the world who are fighting the ills of the evil virus."
In his address, Kim said that he believes that the COVID-19 crisis will be overcome, and people of two Koreas will join hands again.
Kim also said his country would continue to bolster its military or self-defense and deterrence.
He also mentioned pursuing innovation, practical changes to improve people's lives.
