The impact of the coronavirus pandemic and remote learning has led to isolation, depression, obesity and suicide in American children and teenagers. CGTN’s Nitza Soledad Perez has this report on the effects of U.S. policies toward schools during the pandemic.

Mental health, substance use, and suicide are on the rise among the U.S. youth, a toll of the pandemic lockdown.

The nation’s fifth largest school district, Clark County School District, which includes Las Vegas, Nevada restarted in-person classes after a surge in student suicides.

"Since this pandemic began, we’ve lost 20 students to suicide," said Jesus Jara, Clark County School District Superintendent.

Between April and October of 2020, hospital emergency departments registered an increase in visits by children between the ages of 5-17 for mental health related issues, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
