Tornado hits Chicago, causing at least one death

A tornado touched down in Chicago, a city in the U.S. state of Illinois, at midday Sunday, bringing along heavy rains and strong winds, accompanied by thunderbolts and lightning, and turning the sky as pitch dark as night.

The Chicago Bears-Baltimore Ravens game scheduled to take place at noon at the Soldier Field in Chicago was forced to be postponed, and the fans were evacuated to take shelter inside the Soldier Field.

The National Weather Service put under a tornado watch for all of the Chicago metropolitan area until 16:00 central time, and the area at risk included the entire city of Chicago, other areas of the states of Illinois,Wisconsin and Indiana.It also issued a strong wind advisory for much of the Chicago-area that will last until 20:00 central time.

Local residents were told to take cover or stay at home starting from Sunday morning.

The severe weather was reported to have wreaked havoc across 26 U.S. states. Up to now, there was at least one death reported, along with heavy damage to homes and infrastructure, including power lines downed.
