The Egyptian state Security prosecution released on Thursday 15 detained activists accused of circulating false news and supporting and joining an outlawed group, official MENA news agency reported.

Among the 15 defendants released pending investigation are Hassan Nafaa, a political science professor at Cairo University, Hazem Abdel-Azim, a former presidential campaigner and government supporter-turned-critic, and Shady el-Ghazaly Harb, a leading member of the liberal Dostour Party.

Nafaa was arrested in late September 2019 while Abdel-Azim and Harb were arrested in May 2018, who all faced similar charges of circulating anti-regime false news, inciting anti-government protests, supporting the currently-blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood.

Their release is believed to have come in response to calls of activists to release the detainees not proven guilty amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
