An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale jolted the southwestern coast of Turkey at 01:31 a.m. local time Friday (2231 GMT on Thursday), according to Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency Authority (AFAD).

The epicenter was determined as the Gokova Bay, an area in the Aegean Sea between the Greek Island of Kos and Turkish province of Mugla's popular resort town Bodrum, according to AFAD.

Mugla governor Esengul Civelek told broadcaster CNNTurk that initial reports showed there were no fatalities on the Turkish side, with a small number of people suffering minor injuries.

Two persons died in Greek Kos island, and in Bodrum, at least 70 people have been rushed to hospital suffering minor injuries, Turkish NTV reported.

The report noted electricity went off in Bodrum while large waves were observed in the sea causing flash flooding in the streets.

The quake, with a depth of 10 km under the sea, was felt in the western city of Izmir as well, said the reports. People have been warned by authorities to stay outdoors.
