A truck driver killed eight people who were taking part in a festival along a highway in the northwest of Bolivia, announced the country's police commander, Abel de la Barra, on Thursday.

This accident sparked the fury of the other locals who detained the driver, severely beat him, and almost killed him as revenge.

"He is not dead, he is alive, the individual was detained by the residents and is severely injured. There was no lynching but we can say there was an attempt," de la Barra explained to journalists in La Paz.

According to the commander, the incident happened around 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday when a festival was taking place in Pampa Colorada in the province of Chayanta.

"The villagers were dancing along the...highway as is customary among certain communities and villages in our country. Suddenly, a truck arrived and slammed into a number of people," he continued.

De la Barra said that police officers had been dispatched to the area to investigate into the case.
