Spain's former king Juan Carlos I underwent a "successful" triple aortocoronary heart bypass operation on Saturday at the Quiron de Pozuelo de Alarcon clinic, just outside of the Spanish capital of Madrid.

The Director of the Quiron Hospital Group in Madrid, Lucia Alonso, read out a medical report to the press after the operation, explaining the procedure had been "a success" and passed "without incident."

The operation was the 16th surgical procedure the 81-year-old Juan Carlos I, who abdicated in favor of his son Felipe VI in 2014, has undergone in his life.

The most recent of these was a knee replacement operation in April 2018, while the most famous was a hip-replacement after he fractured his pelvis during a controversial hunting trip to Botswana in 2012.
