China will hold an annual memorial service for the victims of the Nanjing Massacre in the eastern city of Nanjing on Wednesday.

Leaders of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the central government will attend the ceremony, which takes place on the square in front of the city’s Memorial Hall.

The service pays tribute to the Chinese people killed in the six weeks following the Japanese invasion of the then capital, beginning December 13, 1937.

In February 2014, China's top legislature designated December 13 as a national memorial day for the victims.
