MALE, Feb. 8 (APD) -- Maldives President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has sent members of his Administration’s Cabinet to friendly nations of the Maldives to provide updates on the current situation, the President's office said on Thursday.
Accordingly, the special envoys will visit China, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed has been sent to China, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim to Pakistan and Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Mohamed Shainee to Saudi Arabia.
The Maldives has been in a state of turmoil after the Supreme Court ordered the release of nine political prisoners.
The Maldives Government refused to implement the order and instead declared a state of emergency and made several arrests, including former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and the Chief Justice.
The Maldives Police Service said that Former President Abdul Gayoom was arrested for allegedly; bribing members of the Parliament and attempting to overthrow the Government, bribing judges to influence official conduct, and attempting to create division amongst national security forces and encouraging them to riot.
The Maldives Police Service also stated that Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Chief Justice Ali Hameed were arrested for allegedly; accepting bribes to influence court decisions, attempting to overthrow the Government by misusing official position and obstructing administration of law or other government function.
Furthermore, the Maldives Police Service stated that Judicial Administrator Hassan Saeed Hussain was arrested for allegedly; bribing judges and influencing official conduct, and benefitting from bribes.
The Maldives Government said that due to the arrest and subsequent police investigation against Justice Uz. Ali Hameed Mohamed, the Judicial Service Commission of the Maldives has suspended him as per section 42 of the Judicial Service Commission Administration Regulation.
