An Indian army trooper was wounded Tuesday in an exchange of fire with Pakistani troops on Line of Control (LoC), dividing Kashmir, officials said.

The exchange of fire between troops of India and Pakistan took place in Pallanwala sector in frontier Akhnoor of Jammu district, around 316 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian- controlled Kashmir.

"Pakistan army today afternoon resorted to unprovoked firing and targeted our posts in Pallanwala sector," Lt Col Manish Mehta, an Indian military spokesman told Xinhua.

"One trooper on our side was wounded in the firing and he was immediately hospitalized," he added.

Indian side also retaliated to the firing and exchange continued for some time.

According to Indian officials, 563 ceasefire violations were recorded this year on LoC and international border (IB). Of them 410 ceasefire violations were reported along IB and 153 violations along LoC.

During this year's deadly skirmishes between troops of the two countries posted on LoC and IB in Kashmir, 19 people including five Indian troopers were killed on this side and over 150 wounded, Indian officials said.

The Pakistani side, according to reports, also suffered causalities in the stand-off.

Ceasefire violations this year are the highest so far since a 2003 agreement to observe ceasefire was reached between the two nuclear neighbors.

In 2013, a total of 347 ceasefire violations were recorded, according to press count.

Both New Delhi and Islamabad accuse each other of resorting to unprovoked firings and violating cease-fire agreements. And both sides maintain their troops gave befitting reply to the other side.

LoC is a de facto border that divides Kashmir into India and Pakistan controlled parts. The LoC on both sides is guarded by army, while IB is guarded by Border Security Force (BSF) on Indian side and Pakistan Rangers on the other side.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir. Enditem
