BANGKOK, May 16 (APD) -- Two men in a cement truck were arrested with 2.2 million methamphetamine pills found inside the cement tank on Tuesday, Thai media reported.

The truck was heading from northern Thailand's Chiang Mai province to Hat Yai in the south, and on Tuesday morning was stopped by police who received a tipoff about the shipment of the drugs, according to officials from the Narcotic Suppression Bureau.

Local reports said that authorities found 1,100 plastic bags hidden with 2.2 million speed pills inside.

Bangkok Biznews said that the truck driver, 48, and one of his passenger, 31, were arrested and has admitted that they were paid 500,000 baht (14,285 U.S dollars) each for the drug delivery.

The truck's license number was spotted since May 13. Police said it was unusual to transport large quantity of cement from the north to the south, thus they kept following the truck.

Thailand has been marred with drug smuggling, as it borders countries like Myanmar, Cambodia and Malaysia, where narcotics are produced and trafficked. Drugs manufactured from Myanmar are usually delivered from Thailand's northern border and enrooted to the south.

This has been the second drug haul reported in less than 24 hours.

The Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) has seized about 1.55 million methamphetamine tablets and arrested 12 suspects, including two former police officers previously sacked on Monday.
