Armenia on Tuesday announced a Russia-mediated truce with Azerbaijan following border clashes which left 15 Armenian soldiers dead.

The clashes also left 12 Armenian soldiers captured and two combat positions close to the border with Azerbaijan lost.

The announcement comes after Armenia had requested Russia to help defend it against Azerbaijan after the fighting.

The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had discussed the situation on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border in a phone call on Tuesday.

However, no details on the conversation were given.

This is the second time thatRussia has brokered a peace deal between the two nations.

Last year, a 44-day conflict was brought to an end after heavy fighting between ethnic Armenian forces and the Azeri army over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh enclave. The fighting resulted in at least 6,500 people being killed and a victory for Azerbaijan.
