Obama kicks off his Indonesian tour

JAKARTA, June 24 (APD) ** – The United States then-president Barrack Obama has arrived in Indonesia’s resort island of Bali along with his entire family on Friday evening, to kick of his Indonesian holiday which would be continued to Yogyakarta and capital city of Jakarta.

Obama’s entourage used a Gulfstream N50JE charter flight from Guam to spend his holiday in Bali, to stay in an opulent resort located in Ubud and was scheduled to undertake various activities in Bali until June 28.

During his stay in Bali, Obama would visit several Balinese Hindu prominent temples and Tampaksiring, a compound used as presidential palace by first Indonesian president Soekarno.

Playing golf was also listed as part of Obama’s visit to Bali. Most of his holiday in Bali would be spent around Gianyar, a regency that has intense Bali cultural ambience, a Bali military officer overseeing security related to Obama visit Gede Widiana said.

Widiana said procedure to secure VVIPs would be applied to Obama entourage during their stay in Bali.

In Yogyakarta, Obama would spend his holiday from June 28 to 30. Among places he was scheduled to visit were the old Hindu and Buddhist temples of Prambanan and Borobudur respectively.

The Sultan of Jogjakarta had invited Obama for an exclusive dinner in his palace.

In Jakarta, the 44th president of the United States was scheduled to deliver a keynote speech in fourth congress of Indonesian Diaspora Network Global (IDNG) on July 1, making it his first Asian speech after his retirement period since January this year.

Dino Pati Jalal, head of IDNG Board of Trustee said that Obama would speak about pluralism, tolerance and globalization issues in the event.

Prior to his speech Obama was scheduled to have lunch with Indonesian President Joko Widodo in Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, on June 30.

“There won’t be an official state welcome for him. His presence in the Bogor Palace was under President Widodo’s personal invitation. No particular talks was scheduled in the upcoming meeting between the two,” a presidential spokesman Johan Budi Saptoprabowo said.

During his service as the United States president, Barrack Obama visited Indonesia twice, in 2010 and in 2011 respectively.

The initial visit was conducted in Jakarta, that the regarded as homecoming visit, while the last one was in Bali to attend East Asia Summit.

Barrack Obama has an emotional relation with Indonesia as he stayed Jakarta during his childhood from 1967 to 1971 when his mother married to an Indonesian man Lolo Soetoro.
