Ireland's tax revenue in the first eight months of the year was running nearly 1 billion euros ahead of target, according to latest exchequer figures on Tuesday.

The exchequer figures, released by the Department of Finance, showed total tax revenue stood at 24.9 billion euros at the end of August, up 8.4 percent on the same period last year, also 971 million euros or 4.1 percent ahead of the department's target.

Income tax, the country's biggest tax heading, generated 10.6 billion euros, which is 172 million euros or 1.7 percent ahead of profile.

The sales tax took in 7.4 billion euros, which was 261 million euros or 3.7 percent better than originally forecast.

Corporation tax receipts came in at 2.4 billion euros, 186 million euros or 8.5 percent ahead of profile, while excise duty was 3.2 billion euros, which was 156 million euros or 5.2 percent ahead of projections.

The figures also showed the exchequer deficit stood at 6.3 billion euros at the end of August, down from 7.3 billion at this stage last year.

On the expenditure side, the figures showed total net voted expenditure amounted to 27.5 billion euros, which is 476 million euros, or 1.7 percent, down on the same period last year, but still 34 million euros above profile.

This was driven by a 353 million euro overspend in health, which was 4.5 percent over profile, the department said.
