At least six people died and 59 others wounded after a train ploughed into an oil truck operated by state-owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina in Bintaro of South Jakarta on Monday, police said.

The accident took place at around 11:20 a.m. local time when the truck was passing a railroad crossing gate that should have been closed because the train would be passing, Brigadier Tieter Wahyanto, police officer in charge at the national traffic management center, told Xinhua by phone.

"The gate did not close perfectly, hence the truck crossed the railway and then it was hit by the passenger train," he said.

All the injured persons have been rushed to several nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

Many of them are supposed to be the passengers of the train, as the truck is normally loaded with two people, the driver and assistant.

Investigation has been conducted at the scene over the deadly accident, the officer said.
