Samsung is taking aim at the washing machine and dryer with a new home laundry system it is calling the AirDresser, which is available in the UK from today.

A bit like a domestic dry cleaning machine, the AirDresser uses jets of air and steam to remove dust and germs from clothing.

According to the South Korean company, consumers just need to hang clothes inside the unit and set its cycle.

"The Jet Air and Air Hangers release powerful air to loosen and remove ingrained dust, with only minimal noise and vibration, quiet enough for anywhere inside the home, including the bedroom," claimed Samsung.

Using high temperature steam, the product then sanitises and sterilises the clothes too.

Testing which the company commissioned from the Preclinical Science Laboratory at Korea University's college of pharmacology found it eliminated 99.9% of four common viruses, including the flu and herpes.

"AirDresser is Samsung's response to consumer demand for more dynamic performance from even basic appliances," said Jennifer Song, the company's vice president for digital appliances.

Samsung even suggests using the device to sterilise linen and soft toys, and said it could be used in place of specialist services which are often used to treat fur products.

Although the cabinet-sized device is meant to be available from today, there is no price currently stated on Samsung's website.

It has been endorsed by Allergy UK, which says it retails for £1,999 on its website.
