NEW DELHI, July 7 (APD) - According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, the pollution level in Delhi did not drop in the month of June even as it rained heavily.

The CPCB Air Quality Index data between 2016 to June 2017 showed that pollution levels in Delhi did not plunge.

Speaking about the situation D. Saha, the head of the air laboratory in CPCB, said “Delhi hasn’t witnessed a single day in the last 535 days, in which air quality could be termed ‘good’. The air quality in nearly 50% of the days had poor category air quality followed by very poor.”

According to a report published in Hindustan Times, experts believe that the condition could be the effect of the Green Field Gap, which is a phenomenon in which even heavy rains fail to wash air pollutants.

SN Tripathi, an expert in the field said, “Usually rains wash away the particulate matter. But there are some particulate matters, whose size varies between 0.1 micron and 1 micron. They are not cleaned and linger even after heavy rains. They are hydrophobic and tend to bounce away whenever a rain drop hits them.”

Scientists have warned that the pollution can prove harmful to human beings and cause diseases related to breathing and heart.

In the National Capital Region, Noida and Gurugram, air pollution levels have not been satisfactory as well. However, Gurugram performed slightly well than Noida.
