S.Korean automakers' global car sale falls 3.8 pct in 2019

South Korean automakers' global car sale fell last year on soft demand both at home and abroad, industry data showed Thursday.

Five local automakers, including Hyundai, Kia, GM Korea, Renault Samsung and Ssangyong, sold a total of 7,920,812 vehicles in 2019, down 3.8 percent from the previous year.

Car export declined 4.5 percent over the year to 6,387,646 units last year amid the global economic slowdown, and the number of cars sold in the domestic market slipped 0.8 percent to 1,533,166.

The biggest carmaker Hyundai Motor saw its global car sale reduce 3.6 percent to 4,422,644 vehicles in 2019, while its affiliate Kia Motors posted a 1.5 percent fall at 2,770,693 units.

The global sale of GM Korea and Ssangyong retreated 9.9 percent and 6.5 percent each last year, while the sale of Renault Samsung tumbled in double digits at 177,450 units.
