A senior politician and four-term chief minister of the northern Indian state of Haryana currently serving jail term for corruption has passed Class 12 school examination at the age of 82.
Om Prakash Chautala appeared in the examination at Tihar jail in New Delhi, the capital city of India, where he is currently serving a 10-year jail term.
Chautala's son, Abhay Chautala, told a local newspaper that his father had "decided to utilise his jail term more meaningfully."
"He decided to utilise his jail term more meaningfully. Now, he goes to the jail library daily, where he reads newspapers and books. He asks the jail staff to arrange for his favourite books. He reads books about great politicians across the world. Sometime, he asks us to send course books also," local newspaper Indian Express quoted Abhay Chautala as saying on Wednesday.
The senior Chautala was convicted of corruption in the recruitment of teachers in his state in 1999. Chautala, along with 54 other officials, was found guilty of forging documents during the recruitment of over 3,206 teachers.
Prosecutors said candidates who paid bribes were appointed in place of well-qualified and deserving.
A trial court in 2013 convicted Chautala and others in the scam and later India's top court upheld his conviction in 2015.
