Hong Kong chief executive CY Leung said the Philippine government is going to bear the cost of a victim of the Manila hostage incident for her harm done therein.
Leung said on Tuesday that the long overdue payment came after Leung’s request to the Philippines’ president Aquino III, which made the latter transmitting the money to Yik Siu-ling, whose under jaw was shattered by a bullet in the tragedy, for her imminent surgery operation.
Meanwhile, Aquino has also dispatched its cabinet secretary to Hong Kong, to negotiate with the HK government’s secretary for security Lai Tung-kwok and chief executive’s office director Edward Yau, concerning the details for the compensation arrangements to the survivors and deceased persons’ families of the tragedy, Leung said.
Yik has been suffering from difficulties of eating, with scars left on her chin, even after a few surgery operations beforehand. These were attributed to a shoot out by a Filipino policeman Rolando Mendoza in the bus hostage in Manila three years ago. Mendoza killed seven Hong Kong people in the catastrophe.
Leung said Yik expressed gratitude towards the compensation from Philippines. He stressed that the incident has not been resolved, but what the country did set good foundation for further progress to achieve a satisfactory outcome in the future.
