Africa's COVID-19 infections at 1,128,245: Africa CDC

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Africa jumped to 1,128,245 on Tuesday as countries continue to record steady rises in infections.

The latest figures published by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention also show that the continent has reported 25,884 COVID-19-related deaths.

South Africa remains the worst affected country by the pandemic in Africa, having registered more than half of the continent’s caseload.

Figures from the country's Health Ministry show the country has reported 589,886 cases and 11,982 fatalities.

The figures represent 52.3 percent of Africa's infections and 46.3 percent of its deaths.

Egypt is Africa's second-worst-affected country, having recorded 96,590 cases and 5,173 deaths.

Further on, five countries on the continent have reported more than 40,000 COVID-19 infections, the other thee being Nigeria (49,485), Morocco (43,558) and Ghana (42,653).

In terms of death tolls, Algeria (1,379) is the only other country in Africa besides South Africa and Egypt to have reported more than 1,000 fatalities.

Globally, the world's COVID-19 infections neared the 22 million mark, with a death toll exceeding 774,000.
