India and Pakistan officially joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in June 2016, which allows the group to become the most populous regional international organization in the world. China hopes the two nations will improve their relations from this day forward.

Experts maintain that the SCO can be significant for Pakistan in helping to strengthen its security against non-conventional threats, along with seeking new opportunities for economic cooperation with regional economic and security powers. They add that Pakistan can get on good terms with India using the SCO platform.

Gopal Baglay, spokesperson of India’s Ministry of External Affairs, said that joining the SCO is vital in the context of regional security, stability, particularly "in our neighborhood."

Pakistan and India, who until now have been observers, will be the first nations to be inducted as members since the formation of the organization. After these two countries' inclusion, the SCO will represent 40 percent of the world's population and 20 percent of global GDP.
