New Delhi, April 17 (APD) - The chairman of Foxconn Technology Group, Terry Gou recently announced that production of Apple’s handsets will begin in India this year.
Gou informed that as his Taiwanese company was lookingfor opportunities to expand, the India Prime Minister, Narendra Modi invited him to India.
Older models of iPhone are still produced in the city of Bengaluru, however now the plant will make the recent models.
Foxconn has two assembly facilities in the province of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, which produce devices for Xiaomi and Nokia.
The trial production of the latest iPhones would begin soon while the mass assembly will start later at a factory near Chennai in south India.
Speaking at an event in Taiwan, Gou said, “In the future, we will play a very important role in India’s smartphone industry. We have moved our production lines there.”
The smartphone market in India is one of the largest in the world. Chinese companies like Huawei Technologies and Xiaomi have been big players in the field, leaving a small share of the industry for Apple.
However, with a manufacturing plant in India the import duties would be cut by about 20%, making Apple a stronger player in the field.
Previously, mass production of iPhones was being done in China. While plants will continue to operate in China, analysts are still unsure about how will manufacturing in India impact the Chinese market.
